Gaël Monfils, the 40-year-old French tennis star has closed out his Grand Slam career with 201 matches played and 131 wins, the most by any Frenchman in major tournament history.

However, what he’s planning to do next isn’t what most fans expected.

“My next chapter is looking more in an office and working in finance,” he said. He added that he’ll still keep an eye on tennis, since he loves the sport and his wife, Elina Svitolina, is still playing, but doesn’t expect to be heavily involved with the sport next year beyond supporting her. As he put it, he will mostly be “more of a finance guy” going forward.

While the pivot may seem sudden, Monfils has previously spoken about his interest in finance for the past couple of years. “Maybe I’d like to work in finance, as a wealth manager or in a private bank,” he said in a YouTube video back in 2024. “That appeals to me.”

A standout junior player, Monfils bypassed college entirely, turning pro in 2004 at 18 to join the ATP Tour. When asked whether a finance career would mean heading back to school, he said, “Yeah, I mean, actually, I’ve done some internships when I was a little bit hurt and couldn’t practice a full day.”
